A recent Wall Street Journal article explores word of a potential partnership or joint-venture between Sprint and Clearwire. To recap: both companies are investing heavily in WiMAX, with Sprint committed to pumping $3 billion into their WiMAX network over the course of the next year, and Clearwire acquiring spectrum through a $1 billion loan facility backed by Intel and Motorola, according to a recent iTWire article.
Rather than create competing networks, having Sprint and Clearwire join forces would lessen potential competition for either company and unify their respective interests in WiMAX—something both companies would probably like to reserve as their own distinguished investment. The next move for either company remains to be seen, though the potential power that can be tapped by a partnership between the two could have major effects on the United State’s WiMAX network.
