Martyn Williams has written a fascinating hands-on account of his experience with WiBro services in Korea. After hearing about last year’s promotional testing of WiMAX’s internet capabilities on a WiMAX-enabled bus, Williams decided to test it out himself. According to his report, Williams was able to steadily access the web, check e-mail and even stream video news clips throughout a semi-subterranean 30-minute subway ride. He achieved even better internet connectivity on a bus and in a Korean coffee shop.

Furthermore, a service that would be vied for in the United States seems to be taken for granted as second nature in Korea. Williams reports that his WiMAX subway experiment “did not draw the attention of passengers sitting next to me. In a country where most high-end cell phones have TV reception, watching streaming video on the train doesn’t’ seem to impress anyone.”

If WiBro’s success in Korea is any indication of what WiMAX connectivity will be like in the United States, William’s experiment provides some exciting prospects for the advancements American mobile connectivity could experience very soon.
